Excessive flatulence can be quite an embarrassing problem, in spite of the fact that several people suffer from it. It refers to the state of having excessive gas in the stomach or the intestines. Apart from being an embarrassment, flatulence could also lead to several discomforts like bloating or heaviness. Therefore, many people who suffer from this problem are interested in methods that can help in treating flatulence. However, in order to be successful in preventing flatulence, it is important to understand what the causes of excessive flatulence are.


There are three main causes of excessive flatulence in humans, which include:

Eating foods that are difficult to absorb – Some foods, especially those that are high in carbohydrates cannot be easily digested and therefore, they get passed down into the colon. Then, the bacteria that are present in the colon break the carbs down and gas is produced in the process, which is eliminated in the form of flatulence. Foods that are known to cause flatulence are pulses, lentils, beans, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, apples and prunes.Swallowing more air than is normal – It is perfectly normal to swallow some amount of air while breathing, eating and talking. However, when more air is swallowed, than is normal, it could lead to excessive flatulence. Some of the activities that could result in swallowing excessive air are chewing gum, eating too fast and smoking.Suffering from an underlying condition that can affect the digestive system – Health conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), chronic constipation and lactose intolerance are some of the most common causes of excessive flatulence in a person.

Treating, cure flatulence


Treatment options for flatulence depend mainly on the causes. There are several over the counter medicines that can relieve the discomfort. However, it is preferable to prevent this condition, by using certain remedies for flatulence, which include:

Drinking half a teaspoon of ginger powder, mixed with warm water. A pinch of rock salt can also be added, to make this remedy more effective.Adding 2 tablespoons of brandy, to a glass of water and consuming it just before going to bed. As a nightly routine, this helps get rid of flatulence.Chewing on a few pieces of ginger that have been soaked in lime water. This remedy may not be the most pleasant, but should be used after every meal.Mixing a teaspoon of honey and one drop of dill oil together and consuming it immediately after eating.

However, if the remedies for flatulence mentioned above do not bring about any relief within a few days, it may be best to consult a doctor about the problem.
